Frequent Flyer Miles Tips

By CoPilot on March 4, 2010

As someone who travels frequently, there are few things I like better than seeing that I have racked up enough frequent flyer miles to get that next flight for free. It’s especially fun when I’ve got the points sitting there and know I can use them to take a vacation. So if you’re someone like me who travels on a regular basis whether it’s for business or pleasure, then you owe it to yourself to be taking advantage of every way you can to get more miles.

For example, do you have a frequent flyer miles card. There are several programs available. For example, American Express and Capital One both offer some pretty nice miles cards. Some are airline specific while others can be used on any airline.

The advantage of using a frequent flyer miles credit card is that you don’t just earn frequent flyer points when you fly, but you also earn frequent flyer miles when you use the credit card to purchase anything. Some cards will give you double points for certain types of purchases but they all give you miles when you buy something.

Here are the best frequent flyer cards I was able to find. I recommend picking the one that’s best for you and applying for that one. (Some cards like the American Express Platinum Card will give you a free domestic flight when you spend just $1,000 on the card in the first so many days – 60 or 90 I think.)

Editor’s Choice Cards

While singling out the very best miles credit card really depends on your needs, here are my top three - one of these should be perfect for you or darn close to it:

1) Chase Sapphire

If you've watched the TV commercials advertising the heck out of this thing, you know exactly who Chase is targeting with the Sapphire Card - upper middle class to affluent consumers with excellent credit ratings. If you qualify for this card, it's an excellent card with a great all around rewards program and no annual fee.

2) Escape by Discover

Discover has two miles card offerings. If you travel frequently, the Escape is hands down the best choice. If you travel less frequently and don't use your credit card very often, you can check out the Discover Miles Card. The Miles card has no annual fee where the Escape does come with a $60 fee. However, the $60 annual fee Escape Card earns double miles with no limit. The Miles card earns double miles only on the first $3,000 in purchases each year.

3) American Express Platinum

The American Express Platinum Card is best suited to travelers flying business class frequently. You can get a free international business class companion ticket when you buy one with the card. That's one of many valuable perks you get with this card. It's also the precursor to the legendary and very exclusive Centurion card (unofficially know as the AMEX Black Card). This card also carries a somewhat hefty $450 annual fee, however, if you take advantage of just some of the services that come with the card, that annual fee is a pittance.
